How to get to Cozumel from Cancun

Hello Hoppers, one of the most frequent questions we get when a hopper visits us from near destinations, is HOW TO GET to Cozumel Island. In this article we will give you useful information, but first, let us tell you a little about how the most beautiful island in the Mexican Caribbean, Cozumel, got it’s name!
Cozumel Island is the largest island of the Yucatán Peninsula. It was named “Cuzamil” in Mayan which means island of the swallows. In Mayan times, Cozumel was believed to be the sanctuary of the fertility Goddess Ixchel. Many statues were built in her honor, and, as legend goes, she sent the island her favourite bird, the swallow in return!
For us here at the Bar Hop excursion, it is very important to share this information on how to get to paradise if you are staying in Cancun, Riviera Maya, Tulum, Akumal, Coba or Puerto Morelos.
From Cancun
There are different options depending on how much you can spend. If you’re staying in Cancun and you need fast service, you take the direct flight from Mayair or flycozumel that takes no more than 20 minutes.
Then, from the Cozumel airport you board a shared transport that will take you to our meeting point at Señor Frogs at Punta Langosta Pier.
Or, you can take a bus in Cancun at the ADO terminal where buses leave each 15 minutes to Playa del Carmen. Approximate time for the bus trip is 55 minutes and they are very comfortable with A/C, plush seats, TV and they leave you very close to the pier where you can take a ferry to Cozumel, or a Private transportation
The crossing takes about 40 minutes either with Ultramar or Winjet. They are the only options and they leave every hour on the hour. Sometimes if you are lucky, you can see dolphins!
From Tulum you can take a taxi or a “colectivo” van to Playa del Carmen, then go to the pier and take the passenger boat to Cozumel. Just check the schedules and be there at least 30 minutes ahead.
From Riviera Maya…
Nowadays, Riviera Maya covers a long stretch of the State, so you have to take a transport that takes you to Playa del Carmen, then go to the ferry pier and take the passenger boat to Cozumel.
Your options will be again a colectivo bus, ADO bus, taxi or a car service that will also be there for you on the way back.
